Henri Channiere`nin romanından uyarlanan bu film ihtilalden sonra hapis cezasına çarptırılan bir grup Fransız mahkumun yaşadıklarını anlatan etkileyici ve dram yüklü bir macera. Fransız Guyana`sındaki kaçışı olmayan bir adada ki hapishaneye gönderilen kelebek lakaplı Henri `Papillion` Charriere (Steve Mcqueen) sürekli olarak kaçmaya çalışmaktadır ve bu çabaları başarısız olur. Oda bundan asla vazgeçmeyecektir. Burada tanıştığı Louis Depo (Dustin Hoffman)`la oluşan dostluklarıyla birlikte onunda yardımını alan Henri hapishanenin vahşi kurallarına karşı daha büyük bir azimle mücadelesine devam eder.
