Sinema tarihinin en çok ödül alan, en geniş kadrolu filmlerinin başında gelen Son İmparator destansı bir öyküdür: 2 yaşında tahta çıkan Çin`in son imparatoru Pi Yi`nin gözünden 60 yılın öyküsü. Çekimi 2,5 yıl süren, 19 binden fazla kişinin rol aldığı film çok şık ve estetik bir görkemli yapımdır. Bertolucci sinemasının izlerini de taşır: Yasak Kent`in avlusunda binlerce figuranla çekilen sahnelerden ipek çarşafların altında belli belirsiz sevişen üç bedene kadar... Son İmparator aynı zamanda Bertolucci`nin Oryantal Üçlemesi`nin ilk filmidir. Bu seri daha sonraki yıllarda çekeceği Çölde Çay ve Küçük Buda ile tamamlanır.
