Ana karakter Grizabella, kendisinin de bir parçası olduğu Jellicle Kedileri’ni terk edip dünyayı tanımayı tercih etmiş, ama dünya ona kibar davranmamıştır. Örselenmiş ve yıpranmış olarak Jellicle Kedileri’ne geri dönmüşse de kabullenilmemekte ve dışlanmaktadır.O ise eski günleri özlemektedir. Jellicle Kedileri yılda bir gün yaptıkları kutlamada yaşlı bilge kedi Deuteronomy şerefine bir oyun sahneleme hazırlığına girişirler. Oyunun sonunda bilge kedi Deuteronomy her yıl bir kişi için kullanılan yeniden doğma hakkını bu kez Jellicle Kedileri’ne geri dönüşü kabul edilmeyen Grizabella için kullanılır ve Grizabella bir kez daha Hatıra şarkısını söyleyerek Jellicle Kedileri’ne kabul edilir, yeniden doğar.
